Start a plan
- 1Sign in and go to My floor plans.
- 2Choose New project.
- 3Pick a template to start from, or Blank plan for an empty grid.
The plan opens in the editor and saves to your account as you work. There's no save button to remember.
Short guides to drawing your plan, seeing it in 3D, sharing it and downloading the files.
Start a plan and find your way around the editor.
The plan opens in the editor and saves to your account as you work. There's no save button to remember.
The tools run down the left side. The plan sits in the middle, and the panel on the right shows the settings of whatever you've selected, or of the whole plan when nothing is selected.
The bar along the top has undo and redo, Layers, Floors, the 2D, Split and 3D switch, Present, Comments, History, Share and Export.
Press ? in the editor to see every keyboard shortcut.
Choose Accessibility at the foot of any page for larger text, stronger contrast, underlined links, easier reading, no animations or a bolder keyboard outline. Your choices are remembered in this browser, and Back to normal undoes them all.
Scroll or pinch to zoom at the pointer. To move around, hold Space and drag, drag with the right or middle mouse button, use two fingers on a trackpad, or pick the Move around tool H.
The percentage in the bottom corner fits the whole plan on screen when you click it.
Draw walls, turn spaces into rooms and set exact sizes.
Walls snap to the grid and to each other, so corners meet. Hold Shift to draw at any angle, and press G to turn snapping to the grid on or off.
Select a wall and type its length in the panel on the right, in feet and inches like 12' 6" or in metres like 3.8 m. The panel also sets the wall's thickness and height, and a different height at its far end for a sloped top.
Wall lengths measure the inside face by default, so they match what you'd measure in the room. Switch to the centre line under Measure walls in the plan's settings.
Pick the Room tool R and click inside a space surrounded by walls to make it a room. Fill every space, in the hint bar, does the whole plan at once.
You can also drag out a rectangular room, or hold Alt and click corner by corner for any shape. Each room shows its name, size and area. Select it to rename it or change its floor and walls.
Measured a room with a tape? Choose Room from measurements in the tools and type each wall's length and the turn at each corner, or just the width and depth for a rectangle. Add doors and windows by their distance from the corner. DrawPlans draws the walls and the room for you.
The Curved wall tool C draws a wall along an arc: click where it starts and where it ends, then move to bend it and click. Choose Round room instead in the hint bar for a circular room.
Add openings to walls, and fences with gates outside.
Pick the Door tool D or the Window tool N and click a wall. Drag an opening along its wall, or onto another wall, to move it.
Select it to set its width, height and sill height, flip which way a door swings, or turn it into a garage door or a plain opening.
The Fence tool E draws fences post to post, like walls. Choose the style and colour in the panel. To add a gate, use the Door tool on a fence.
Place furniture at true size, plus electrical and plumbing symbols.
Pick the Furniture tool F to open the library, then click an item or drag it onto the plan. Beds, sofas, kitchens, bathrooms, stairs, event tables, warehouse racks and shipping containers are all drawn at their real size.
Items like beds and cabinets settle against the nearest wall. Hold Shift while placing to put them anywhere. Turn the selection 90° with [ and []]], and resize or rename it in the panel.
Select a piece you've set up, like a kitchen island at its real size with its colour and price, and choose Save to My items in the panel. It shows at the top of the furniture library, ready to place in any plan.
My items are saved to your account, so they're there on any device you sign in on. Hover over one in the library and click its × to remove it.
Select a room and choose Furnish under Furnish this room. The kind of room comes from its name (bedroom, kitchen, office and so on); pick another from the list if it's wrong. The usual furniture goes in, sized to fit, with doorways kept clear and tall pieces kept away from windows.
Furniture already in the room stays where it is. Anything that doesn't fit is named, and Undo takes everything that was added out again.
Select a room to choose its floor (wood, tile, terrazzo, slate, vinyl, checkerboard, chevron, concrete and more) and how its walls look in 3D: paint, wallpaper, wood panels, wall or subway tile, brick, stone or concrete, in any colour.
With nothing selected, Outside walls sets the outside of the house: paint, siding, brick, stone, stucco, board and batten or shingles.
Select an item, door or window to give it a price, a note and a shop link. They all go into the item list you can download from Export, and shop links can be clicked on your share page.
The library has outlets, switches, lights, plumbing, heating and security symbols. The Wire tool I joins two of them, for example a switch to the lights it controls. A legend of the symbols you used can go on your exports.
Units, the Measure tool and room areas.
Click an empty part of the plan to see its settings, then choose ft / in or m / cm under Units. Every length and area on the plan and in your exports switches with it.
The Measure tool M measures between any two points you click. Press Enter or choose Keep to leave the measurement on the plan as a dimension line.
Houses with more than one floor, roofs and hiding parts of the plan.
Open Floors in the top bar and choose Add a floor above, Add a floor above with these walls, or Add a floor below. Switch floors from the same menu. The floor below shows faintly so you can line things up.
With nothing selected, choose Gable, Hip, Shed or Flat under Roof in the panel. The roof covers the walls of the floor you're on. Select the roof to change its slope and height, or switch Close the ends off for open gables.
Layers in the top bar can hide or lock groups like furniture, electrical, plumbing, text and measurements. Hidden layers stay out of your exports and share page too.
Look around in 3D, walk through, and make pictures and 360° photos.
Switch to 3D in the top bar, or Split to see 2D and 3D side by side. Drag to orbit, right-drag to pan and scroll to zoom. Changes you make in 2D show in 3D straight away.
Walk puts you inside at eye height: use W A S D or the arrow keys, hold Shift to go faster and drag to look around. Esc stops walking.
Cut slices through the house to show the inside, and you can hide the roof. Views saves the current camera angle so you can come back to it, and saved views become slides in Present.
Render, in the 3D view's bar, makes a sharp picture of what you see, in HD or 4K, with soft shadows and shading in the corners. It can also make a 360° photo from inside any room, or from where you're standing while walking, to look all the way around.
Saved 360° photos open as panoramas in photo apps and on social sites. Saving pictures and 360° photos needs a plan, like other downloads. People with your share link can look around in 360° too.
Draw over a photo, scan or PDF of an existing plan.
The picture stays private: it isn't part of your share link or your exports.
Download PDF, PNG, SVG, DXF, 3D models and the item list.
Choose Export and pick a format:
Choose what shows, such as room names, door swings or the symbol legend, and colour or black and white. Downloads need a plan.
Check your browser's downloads list first; the file may already be there. If your browser asked whether to allow downloads from drawplans.net, allow them and try again.
If a message says downloads come with a plan, choose one on the pricing page, then export again.
How saving works, going back to an earlier version and copying a plan.
Every change saves to your account a moment later, and the top bar shows when it's saved. Press Ctrl or ⌘ with S to save straight away. Open your plans from any computer, tablet or phone.
History keeps earlier versions of your plan as you work. Save a version with a name before a big change, and restore any version later. Restoring first keeps a copy of the plan as it was, so you can change your mind.
On My floor plans, open the menu on a plan's card to rename, duplicate or delete it. A duplicate copies the drawing; its share link and comments start fresh.
Signing in, and what a plan includes.

After you sign up you can draw a plan with every tool and look at it in 3D. Downloads, share links and more than one plan need a plan. Prices and the differences between them are on the pricing page.
Press ? in the editor to see this list there.
The answers about prices and plans are on the pricing page, and the common questions are in the FAQ. For anything else, see Contact.
